The African Network of Women in Astronomy (AfNWA) is pleased to invite you to an online, hands-on training on Python Programming for Astronomy, taking place on 15–16 September 2026, starting at 16:00 GMT+2.
This introductory course is designed to familiarise participants with the core scientific Python tools used in astronomy and research. Across two practical online sessions of two hours each, participants will learn how to use NumPy for array-based computation, Matplotlib for data visualisation, and Astropy for working with astronomical units, tables, and coordinate systems.
Day 1: Python & NumPy Fundamentals
Participants will explore arrays, indexing, and vectorised operations, with a focus on building a practical foundation for working with scientific data in Python.
Day 2: Matplotlib & Astropy Essentials
The second session will introduce practical data visualisation using Matplotlib and the essential Astropy tools used in real astronomical research workflows.
The training will be exercise-driven, with short guided problems and practical activities throughout rather than lengthy lectures. No prior experience with NumPy, Matplotlib, or Astropy is required; basic familiarity with running code in Python notebooks is sufficient.
