Membership benefits are exclusively available to paid members, with full members enjoying the full range of privileges. Associate and student members are encouraged to join, with membership fees becoming applicable from the 2027/28 financial year.
For Individual Members:
- Discounts on registration fee for the AfAS conference (50% Full and no fees for full time Student members, 40% Associate members)
- Discounts (at least 10%) on registration fee for other astronomy conferences organised by AfAS partners eg OAO, OAE, OAD, EAS, SAIP etc (subject to negotiation with conference organizers)
- Opportunity to apply for the AfAS Early Career seed grant (ie this grant could be made available to AfAS members only) (grant will be made only to AfAS members in the future)
- AfAS members will be on a priority list for travel grants
- Training / Capacity development (a calendar of training workshops could be drawn up to cover topics such as how to apply for telescope time on SALT, MeerKAT etc. The workshops could be free or highly discounted for AfAS members, with a charge for non-members)
- Discounts on entry to planetaria, science museums etc in Africa (subject to negotiation)
- Access to adverts for post-doc positions, grants etc in AfAS publications and publications of AfAS associates
