Meryem Guennoun
Executive Officer
Dr Meryem Guennoun is the Executive Officer of the African Astronomical Society (AfAS) and a researcher specializing in meteoroid dynamics and parent-body associations of meteor showers. She is affiliated with Cadi Ayyad University, Morocco, where she completed her doctoral studies in astrophysics.
Her research focuses on meteoroid stream identification, fireball observations, and the linkage between meteoroids and Near-Earth Asteroids. She has played a leading role in meteor observation networks in Morocco and has contributed to international collaborations aimed at strengthening planetary science research in Africa. Meryem has presented her work at major international forums, including the International Astronomical Union General Assembly.
Beyond research, she is actively involved in capacity building and science outreach across the continent. She has coordinated student participation in international asteroid search campaigns and contributed to initiatives supporting young African scientists, particularly women in astronomy.
Recipient of multiple recognitions, including the L’Oréal-UNESCO Young Talent Award (Maghreb Programme) and an official recognition award from Cadi Ayyad University for excellence in international representation, Meryem is committed to advancing astronomy research and empowering the next generation of African scientists. Her vision is to strengthen Africa’s leadership in space science through research excellence, education, and collaboration.
