About Membership

Background:

The African Astronomical Society (AfAS) was re-launched at the “Astronomy in Africa” meeting in Cape Town, March 2019, and an Executive Committee (EC) was elected by the attending participants (both in person and by video). The next logical step is to recruit members to join the Society.

Although the membership categories are specified in the AfAS Constitution (adopted at the same Cape Town meeting), the categories and their requirements were not extensively discussed during the meeting and hence some additional detail is required.

The remit of the Membership Committee is to formulate and present a membership strategy to the EC for adoption, reflecting, as best as can be achieved, the wishes of the astronomy community. The strategy should speak to the constitution in that AfAS should be a body for professional astronomers while also being inclusive of amateurs and professionals working in associated fields such as education and outreach.

Objectives of the Membership Committee:

To clarify the membership categories of AfAS.
To finalize the requirements for each membership category.
Liaise with the Communications Committee for membership recruitment.
